Many international exchange students are leaving this month for home. They have been on an adventure of a lifetime – living and going to school in Northern Michigan Communities this past school year. Many have mixed feelings about leaving: they want to see their parents and friends back home, but they will also miss people here, plus are concerned – Will they be able to speak their native language again? Have they changed a lot? Will their parents and friends recognize them?
So, take a leap of faith this year! If you cannot travel abroad, but want to experience another culture, consider opening your heart and your home to a Youth For Understanding high school exchange student for this next school year! Or maybe you would host shorter-term in a welcome placement? You would provide a place to live, three meals a day, encouragement, guidance and love to your new exchange son/daughter. It is a typical family living experience—NOT a tourist/travel opportunity. Families come in all shapes and sizes, with and without children of all ages.
The students come with their own spending money, health insurance, and the commitment to live according to the rules and values of your family and Youth for Understanding (www.yfu-usa.org). They can share a room with a host sibling. Early placements give you and your student the opportunity to get to know each other – establishing a bond that will grow and help for a successful year!
Students arrive in August! For detailed information to see if hosting might be right for you, Call Field Director Barb Wisney at 800-872-0200, ext. 241 today! firstname.lastname@example.org (Traverse City based)
