Celebrate the accomplishments of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) in Alpena, Michigan as they expand to protect the Great Lakes and their rich history!
This has been an absolutely incredible year for the sanctuary, and there are several exciting developments on the horizon. The Friends of TBNMS invite you to a Sanctuary Celebration on Saturday, September 6 at 6:30 pm. Join us at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center for live music, cash bar, and hors d’oeuvres. Also on September 6, in partnership with Alpena Shipwreck Tours, is Community Appreciation Day! Special events in exhibits all day, and FREE shipwreck tours aboard the glass bottom boat Lady Michigan! Cruises are at 9, 11, 1, and 3. Designated in 2000, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of 14 sites managed by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and the only one in the Great Lakes. Co-managed by NOAA and the State of Michigan, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has become an important part of the regional economy. Through increased tourism and related business development, the sanctuary is working with various partners to encourage sustainable tourism and foster greater awareness of the Great Lakes and their rich maritime heritage.
