INTO THE WOODS, a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, twists traditional Grimm fairy tales and weaves them into a plot around a baker and his wife who long for a child.
Read on for just a small tease of the characters to follow. Enter: a naïve Little Red Riding Hood, a step-family who has perfected the “Mean Girl” persona, a bean-brained Jack, a witch who raps and zaps, and a lecherous wolf-AND that is just Act One/Scene One! Plus there is the baker and his wife who plan, plot and plead with the witch to unlock the curse that keeps them childless. With a laundry list of curse-lifting items and only three nights’ time to accomplish the task, the baker and wife set out and encounter other Grimm’s fairy tale characters along the way, cajoling them to relinquish their goods.
Trust us-this reads like a Sondheim soap opera with a message-be careful what you wish for, you may get it and there’s no guarantee that it will make you happy. The story is told in song and the movement of plot from fairy tale to fairy tale will read unlike the ones you grew up hearing-presenting a convincing twist of the tried-and-true Grimm, wrapping the audience in its web of tangled turns.
