Chicago-based graphic artist David Westerfield says he “paints what I like.” And what he likes is Leelanau County’s stunning landscapes, rustic buildings and historic places. An exhibition of Westerfield’s many likes opens June 28 at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.
Westerfield’s transition from graphic designer and illustrator to a life of full-time painting began in 2006 after 25 years in commercial art. He works in oil paint and favors the immediacy of the plein air approach. “Ideally, I think the most authentic work is done directly from the subject,” he said. The artist works on site, usually on a smaller scale, then brings his field canvas back to the studio for more detail work.
A reception to meet the artist is June 28, 6 p.m. at the gallery. The exhibition continues through July 4. For more information, please call 231/334-3179.
