Join the Grand Traverse Lighthouse for the annual Christmas event at the Light. Lighthouse volunteers have recreated a traditional McCormick family Christmas of the 1920's and 1930's, based on Bette Mc Cormick Olli's book, The Way it Was: Memories of My Childhood at Grand Traverse Lighthouse.
Hanging from the fireplace mantle are the McCormick children's stockings, filled with an orange, Brazil nuts and hard candy. The dining room table is filled with the sights and smells of an actual holiday meal of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, strawberries and homemade bread.
A special guided tour sheet is available for visitors to take a self-guided walking tour through each room and read about the many wonderful things that happened during a typical McCormick Family Christmas.
The sounds of holiday cheer and caroling echo through the old Lighthouse and Fog Signal Building, with music and entertainment by musicians Mark & Mary Westmaas at 1pm, Bethany Lutheran Church of Northport at 2pm, Local volunteers play the antique organ in the lighthouse keeper's residence.
The Lighthouse is open for all to climb the tower to see the magnificent view of Lake Michigan. There are also ornaments to decorate.
Santa arrives on a fire truck at 2:30pm to meet the children and hand out traditional holiday treats.
Local author Jeff Kessler is on hand for a book signing for his three new books about Victor the Friendly Vampire. Victor is the manager of the Northport Lighthouse.
Refreshments available. There is no admission fee for this event.
The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is located nine miles north of Northport, inside the Leelanau State Park.
