Art Prize Artist Reception at TASTES of Black Star Farms

TASTES of Black Star Farms in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons honors the artistry of previous Village employee and Traverse City Art Prize winner Dan Heffron.

Artist Dan Heffron’s unique sculptures have often been on display at TASTES. The ornate wood carvings have sparked many conversations with tasting room staff. It is no wonder that Dan’s most recent piece took 6th place in this year’s Art Prize contest.

To celebrate this high caliber award TASTES of Black Star Farms is hosting a special reception from 5-7 pm on November 20, 2013.  Light appetizers will be provided as well as wine and drink specials.

Dan Heffron is a naturalist at heart and has spent most of his time in Northern Michigan forests looking at the natural world for artistic inspiration. In a recent article he notes, “for my seventh birthday, my parents bought me a wood burning kit and a jack knife. Carving wildlife came naturally to me.” His entry in this year’s Art Prize was a fur seal carved from a single, black walnut log. Dan notes the creation took approximately 4,000 hours of actual carving plus a 35 year lifetime of endless trials and error on other artistic wood sculptures.  Now it’s time to celebrate his 6th place Art Prize Award.
