Event Description

BookTalkers discussion group meets at 6:00 pm in the Armstrong Conference Room

The Bells: Monday, December 17, 6 pm

Born in a church belfry in the Swiss Alps, Moses Froben lives a simple, contented life until the day his father, the village priest, recognizes Moses' sense of hearing and its power to expose his sins. Cast into the world with only his ears to protect and guide him, Moses, who hasn’t really spoken until then, discovers his voice--that is, his extraordinary gift for singing--and grows to manhood to become Lo Suizzero, the musical toast of Europe in the eighteenth century. Years later, in a letter to his son, Froben recounts being rescued from his father's murderous plan by monks and taken to their abbey, where the choirmaster recognizes the boy's gift and goes to inhumane lengths to preserve it. A poignant and engrossing story of the human spirit, this novel by Richard Harvell has been enjoyed and recommended by many local readers.
