Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Monday, January 21, 6 pm

On July 24, 1911, Yale professor Hiram Bingham famously stumbled upon Machu Picchu while scaling the Andes. Later he was accused of stealing artifacts and, ultimately, of stealing credit for the find. To get to the truth of the matter and to celebrate the centennial of Bingham's discovery, travel magazine editor Mark Adams (who had never actually slept in a tent) decided on a little adventure of his own: he would travel to Peru and attempt to retrace the explorer’s footsteps. With a crusty, antisocial Australian survivalist and several Quechua-speaking, coca-chewing mule tenders as his guides, Adams takes readers through some of the most gorgeous and historic landscapes in Peru. Even if you've never traveled farther than the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World, you're guaranteed to be swept up in Adams' vivid descriptions of the near-unpronounceable sights along the Inca trail, as well as the remarkable amount of information he shares about this historic and mysterious corner of the world.
