Green Elk Rapids Days pays tribute to the environment and the many ways to be "green."
The 5th annual event highlights creative and educational approaches to a "GreenER" life.
May 7, 5-7pm: Silent Spring Book discussion during Happy Hour at Siren Hall. Join the discussion led by Terri Reisig, ERHS literature teacher and NMC Instructor. Please be prepared to share what you think are the key messages of the book and its relevance today.
May 9, 6-8pm: Silent Spring PBS film at Marina Pavilion. 6pm: Film and popcorn. Bring your own beverage or snack. 7pm: Local speakers address the significance of pesticides, organic foods and genetically modified foods. Hosted with Elk Rapids Historical Society. May 11, 9am-3pm: Super Recycling Day at Recycling Lot. Recycle-A-Bicycle accepts donated & repairable bikes at this lot. 9:30am: Green Burials, co-hosted by Covell Funeral Home, 312 Pine St. 10am-2pm: Exhibits & demos by Brick Wheels and The Wet Mitten. 10:30am: The Lorax children's story hour with artist/storyteller Martina Hahn. The Lighthouse at Presbyterian Church. 2pm: Parks & Rec Commission hosts ribbon cutting and short bike tour of Michigan Bike Rte. 35 to Wilcox-Palmer-Shah Preserve. Depart from Gov't. Center.
May 11-20: "Trashformations" Competition, throughout the Village.
May 14: Student projects & activities at Dam Beach.
May 16, 5-7pm: Shorts Brewery hosts Business After Hours with program highlighting their energy conservation and recycling practices. Guided tours, hors d'oeuvres and Short's beer.
May 18, 8am-4pm: Shorts Brewery "Shorts-to-Shorts" Paddle event, from Bellaire to Elk Rapids.
May 18, 7am-til done: Village curbside trash pickup.
May 20, 6pm: Special Village Council meeting with special guest speaker Pat Lindermann, Ingham Cty. Drain Commissioner. Announcements of essay winners and Trashformation winners.
May 29: Maple Bay Farm. Cherryland student spring field trip.
Elk Rapids, on East Grand Traverse Bay and Elk Lake, is about 15 miles northeast of Traverse City on US-31.
