The Ride, which is held during National Bike Safety Month and Week, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, cyclists, police, city officials and residents.
Bicyclists take to the roads in a slow, silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while riding on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to Share the Road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights. The ride reminds all of us of the vulnerability bicyclists face riding on our streets and roads and to call attention to motorists and cyclists alike to Share the Road.
This year's Ride of Silence route leisurely meanders through our beautiful Traverse City. This group ride is intended to take place at a comfortable pace for nearly all cyclists. We ride in complete silence except for occasional messages that may be called out in order to assure the safety of the riders.
The Ride of Silence takes place in over 320 communities worldwide (27 cities in Michigan). Media from previous years reported that our rides were incredibly moving as the cyclists rode in complete reverence, occasionally wiping away a tear or patting a friend on the back. Black arm-bands are provided to all riders. Please bring your own arm-band if you have one.
Start/End: Old railroad depot near Woodmere Ave. and Eighth Street (next to the “Filling Station” brewery)
