The Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts hosts the Annual Juried Art exhibition in the Beck, Borwell and Phyllis and Rob Foster Galleries.
At the artist’s reception held Sept. 6, four $400 Awards of Excellence were announced: Michael Feehan, of Belmont, MI for his oil painting "Michigan Rising;" Ann Loveless of Frankfort, MI for her quilt "Poppies;" Gerald Moore, of Gaines, MI for his oil painting "Entangled Maple;" Carolyn Swift, of Traverse City, MI for her mixed media collage "Midlife 18." These awards are made possible by the generous underwriting support of West Shore Community College’s Performing Arts Series, Jowett Family Funeral Homes, Live for Art Gallery, and Weishaar & Co.
Jurors Brian Barr and Lauren Rice said of the show, "We were very impressed with the amount of strong work submitted for our review. Of 178 entries we selected 62 representing a range of painting, drawing, photography, quilts and sculptural objects. When we were selecting work for inclusion in the exhibition we looked for work that was well crafted, aesthetically strong and professionally presented."
Brian Barr received his Master’s degree in Painting (MFA) from American University, Washington D.C., and then returned to teach as an Associate Professor at his Bachelor’s alma mater in Detroit, the College for Creative Studies. Lauren Rice met Brian while studying painting at American University, Washington D.C., which graduated Rice as an MFA painter.
Exhibit runs through Sept. 29. Art Center hours: Mon.-Thurs. 10am–4:30pm; Fri. 10am-8pm (after Oct. 1 10am-4:30pm); Sat. 10am-4pm; Sun. Noon-4pm.
