My First Car was Made in Michigan.

My first car was a rusted out yellow 1978 Mustang... and it was awesome. I got it for $400 from the most stereotypical used-car place you can imagine, along the side of M-20 between Midland and Mt. Pleasant.

Even though I only drove that thing for a few weeks before it was totaled (woops), it has always held a special place in my heart... as a first car does for most all of us.

For many Up North (and around the world, for that matter), when one says "made in Michigan" they automatically think "cars."

however...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Made Rite Potato Chips may be my all-time favorite made in Michigan product out there...

A bag of those with some french onion dip and you've got an evening. You don't even have to do anything else... just sit on the couch, stare into space, and enjoy...

Got a favorite Michigan product? There is a heck of a lot of great ones to choose from--where in the world would we be without the Rice Krispie treat? Share your fav's and feel free to throw a "first car" story in too...

P.S. though i'll always be partial to vote for food in competition with just about anything else... my second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth vehicles--all Michigan made.

How about furniture? Herman Miller and Knoll have produced some of the coolest furniture designs of the 20th century. And of course there's the cottage icon, Rittenhouse.

Troy, I challenge you to a potato chip taste test! I'll admit I've never tried Made Rite because my family has sworn by Better Made potato chips for three generations. It's the only brand I buy. Was I ever glad several years ago when Glen's Markets began carrying them. Since then they've discontinued selling Better Made potato chips although they do have their pretzels and other snacks from time to time. Imagine my delight recently when I found the chips at Meijer.

Give them a try, folks. You'll never go back to Lay's again.

Even though they are my favorites, I haven't had Made Rite chips in years. My son is on a very special diet which (hallelujah) does include potato chips... but we had to switch brands in order to find chips with the fewest ingredients (salt and potatoes) and cooked in sunflower oil.

These are getting easier and easier to find, which is great.

Anybody know Michigan chips that have eliminated preservatives, etc.?

My first car was also made in Michigan: a cute white 1987 Ford Escort with red interior. My sister and I called it the "Schmallow," as in marshmallow.

When my new years resolution wanes a little more I'll give Made Rites a whirl. I love the jalapeƱo Better Made kettle chips like crazy.

The butcher block in my kitchen that I just cut apples on (sadly, not from Michigan this time o' year) is made by Michigan Maple Block Co. right here in Petoskey: www.mapleblock.com
