I've been mulling things over a bit and really can't seem to settle on just one local craft brewery. If you had to pick one -- just one -- which Northern Michigan craft brewery would you choose as your favorite?
O.K.,
No contest, Shorts Brewery in Bellaire. I recently tasted through 4 of his brews at an event and found them to be some of the best beers i've tasted in a long, long time! You can almost compare them to a fine wine. The aroma and flavors are the most interesting and complex that i've tasted outside of the gold standard(in my book)Belgium. The secondary flavors and and a finish that just keeps on going make this brewery a must try! His IPA, Brown ale and porter are just a few that you have to taste to believe. The bad news is that you can only purchase the beer at the brewery or try it on tap at some of the local bars and eateries around town. Do seek it out, you won't be sorry!
The best in Northern Michigan has got to be Keewanaw Brewing, only Michigan craft in a can, so the evil light cannot taint it. Great for any occassion and VERY portable vs all the glass. Not real heavy beers, but definately top tastes for the styles (i think they only make 3, an amber, a blonde and porter??) Amber my favorite, but hard to find. After that, although they are not NORTHERN, gotta go with Bell's, Founders, Arcadia as best in Michigan. shoot, you asked for one so gotta be- Keweenaw Amber, no, Bell's Amber, wait, Arcadia Hopmouth...............
I have to say Short's in Bellaire also, as much for the quality as for the selection. This is where Right Brain sometimes falls short. North Peak's brews are all high quality as well. What they do they do really well (generally 7-8 to choose from). Kudo's to the current team there. Prior to them taking over I thought that North Peak's brew was awful.
