Halloween Up North?

So, my family (wife and 4 kids - 10, 8, 5, 3) will be in the TC Area for Halloween this year. We're excited - I've never traveled for Halloween, so packing costumes will be a new experience. Where is the best place to go for trick or treating?

Hi Scot,

Your family is in for a treat this year. Traverse City really knows how to celebrate Halloween. The downtown neighborhoods are hands-down the best place to trick-or-treat--specifically the Old Town neighborhood around 6th Street and the Boardman neighborhood around Washington.

The hordes--and I mean hordes-- descend at dusk. I live at the epicenter, and I've never given away candy to fewer than 350 kids. Some blocks report upwards of 500 trick-or-treaters! The sidewalks are crowded, but not unmanageable, even for your littlest one. City police are on patrol keeping everyone safe, and the firefighters pass by on their big rig and pass out treats, too.

When your children have collected all the loot they can carry be sure to take a stroll through the rest of the neighborhood to admire the elaborate decorations. My neighborhood is already getting pretty spooky looking, and Halloween's still three weeks away.

One more thought although this might not be appropriate for children as young as yours. The State Theatre is showing the cult classic "Night of the Living Dead" at 10:45 pm on Halloween night.

Have a blast!

Well, we had a great time. We ended up downtown for the 3:30-5pm trick-or-treat loop and enjoyed seeing all the other costumes. It was an excellent set up, especially for our younger ones.

We then hit a subdivision off or Cedar Run Rd later with the older kids and some friends. The mild weather made for a great night.

And yes..... I scared them with the "Dogmen of Northern Michigan" story......
