Maps From the Third Coast; sharing my up north experience

This blog is for everyone who loves to share their up north experience; that time and place up north with the people we love, and by ourselves, the moments we recognize are special as our day continues to unfold...

This blog is also for the exile. Me. And people like me. Those of us who live away from the region we love and must return when we can. And the time in between, over the miles, we look at the photographs, we read the words, the poetry, and remember.

I spend as much time as possible up north. Particularly, Leelanau and the Grand Traverse Bay area. The harbors and history. The orchards and vineyards. Driving M22. The stark contrast from one season to the next. It has all been a blessing to our family. And though my wife and I visit several weekends and weeks throughout the year with our children, we are mindful that we too are visitors. Up North; this phrase attempts to categorizes through a geographical reference an amazingly diverse region. These towns we visit, they are somebody's home, someone's livelihood. We enjoy talking with the people who live and work there, hearing their stories, their history. And in turn, I will share mine and what up north means to me and my family. Feel free to share your's by commenting to this blog...

Thanks for reading...

Walden

When Henry David Thoreau left the village of Concord on July 4th - a date he contended was, more or less, coincidental given the inference to our American Revolution - he would later write that he had gone to the woods to "live deliberately" - and thus was the first in a string of paradoxical experiences. Several miles outside of town. Alone. Living in a 10 by 15 cabin he, himself, had built. Home for the next two years. 1845. Walden Pond. Though his intent was deliberate living, Thoreau wrote:… Continue

Song of the Exiles; mapping my life up north

As children, my brother and I lived with our parents in a suburb of metro-Detroit. But really, we grew up on the lakes and rivers of northern Michigan. There, our father gave to us the values that come from experiencing first-hand, nature and wildlife. Hiking for hours through the Porcupine Mountains seeing black bears, camping along Grand Traverse Bay, fishing the flood-waters of the Au Sable River. We always stopped for lunch on a sandbar and the evening always ended with a roaring campfire, w… Continue

15th Anniversary

Last weekend, my wife and I enjoyed a three-day weekend celebrating our 15th anniversary. Of course, it was Up North. Leelanau. M22. Glen Arbor. Port Oneida. Leland. Northport. Omena. Suttons Bay. Traverse City - and then across M72 back to Glen Arbor. Unlike down-state, the colors were still at peak. A best-kept secret in the lower parts of the LP. We also had to hit all the art galleries and of course, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Empire...beautiful. We timed our stops with food. Great food. Seriou… Continue

Thank You for the compliments on my page. This is fun!
Yes i remember John Denver, I always liked his music. Especially when we visited The Great Smoky Mountains!
I had a very enjoyable weekend, and hope you did as well.

Betty is 7, so I tried to write as if she was 49. And frankly she acts a little older. She's got a little fuddy duddy in her. And she's suspicious and protective, adding to the age in her perspective I think. One of my colleagues thought she was an older woman from Charlevoix, struggling to be happy. Another didn't like her posts and thought she was a downer. As a writer, it was interesting for me to hear these unvarnished comments. It helped me recognize that to them, she was sad. And I hadn't thought I'd written her that way. Also fun that they didn't recognize me in her. Well I'll have to come up with something else ...

hey, hi, just wanted to check in, now that I outed Betty. You were her biggest fan and I just hope we didn't disappoint you. My ghost writing her blog was a bit of a surprise. Can you appreciate the perspective? And sometime can we catch a cup of coffee?

Thanks, Darren. Funny enough, I used the infamous "queenie pail" from my orchard upbringing to carry in some foodstuffs to a radio show this morning. Thank you for your great blogs!
