Good tires; Life insurance

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 8:35am 0 Comments

Good tires. Life insurance. Same thing. Every day is a good time to check your tires. I have been doing business with Junior’s Tire Service on 8th Street in Traverse City for the past 30 years or so—I don’t think I have bought tires from anyone else in that time. This week, I decided it was time to have a chat with Mark Lindsay at Junior’s. My 2006 Sienna van is all-wheel drive and the original tires had 47,000 miles on them. With Mark’s council, I decided to put Cooper Weather Master tires on… Continue

American Bonsai Society's 2011 winner of the John Y Naka design award--A cascade style pine

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 7:32pm 3 Comments

At the suggestion of a friend, I took photos of my Ponderosa pine bonsai last summer. The tree was collected in the mountains of South Dakota where it had been growing for about 200 years. I then submitted the photos along with the required paperwork to http://absbonsai.org/ . A panel of judges examined all of the entries and the winner is awarded a plaque, and the opportunity of writing an article to be published in the Journal of The American Bonsai…

Traumatic Brain Injury, Gabrielle Giffords, and TC's Dr. Glen Johnson

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 7:30am 0 Comments

Victims of traumatic brain injury can be victimized a second time when they try to find practical, well prepared help on the subject. Dr. Glen Johnson, who has lived in Traverse City for about 25 years, wrote a book on this subject many years ago. It is brief, concise, and well-written in every-day language. It is also offered online, free of charge. If you or someone you know is, or even might be a victim of a brain injury, please send them this link. There is a questionaire that will help…

The Maytag Cider Press: 50 gallons of apple juice per hour!

Posted on October 2, 2010 at 9:20pm 2 Comments

Back in 1981, I had a brainstorm, and converted a washing machine into a cider press. It worked so well, I wrote about it and submitted the article to The Mother Earth News Magazine. They published the article. Eventually it found its way to the World Wide Web at the following link:

There is a special evil in Alzheimer's. It steals the jewels of a well-lived life from both sides of families. I hope the poem can transport you around the disease, if only for a moment.

Thank you, Dean, for your message. I will forward the info to my brother. Do you have a work # or address where I could contact you. My brother's name is Dan Turner. He has never shown his work...maybe he could email you some pictures or send them. Thanks again for answering me...I'm proud of what he does. I could even send a picture if I knew how to on this site. Suzie

Dean,

My brother is very talented in Bonsai. He lives in Redford Twp., MI. I think he would enjoy seeing your work. Would that be possible summer of 2010? or even showing each other's work by email? He has never shared his work with anyone except family, but at some point would like to do much more with this talent. I hope you don't mind me contacting you. Suzie Davies
