Planting our children's olive trees

JERUSALEM, OLD CITY — This morning, before we departed Bethlehem and the West Bank to return to Jerusalem, Run Across Palestine coordinators Timothy Young (from Honor, Michigan) and Vivien Sansour took half an hour to plant an olive tree in Sansour's back yard — a vista that looks out over Bethlehem and…See More

Fruits of Ethiopia: coffee, khat, sugarcane and beautiful people

Here are a few videos that I've taken during the Run Across Ethiopia over the past week, which feature some of the best Ethiopia has to offer — and how to consume them.First is a video of a woman outside the Aragesh Lodge roasting coffee beans over an open fire before serving us strong and delicious "black gold". Next, one of our interpreters, Sue Rafael (I've surely misspelled his name) teaches me how to prepare and then chew "khat", the East African energy drug. The entire world is no…See More

Day 10: Run Across Ethiopia yields to Hase Gola

For the past nine days, my blogging has focused on running — that is, the 10 harriers running nearly 250 miles across southern Ethiopia. I've cataloged their aches and pains, daily mileage and terrain, and how the runners have interacted and boosted each other through this painstaking endeavor. In other words, I've been a…See More

Day 9 of Run Across Ethiopia: Music to our ears

Imagine that you're a poor farmer in the Sidamo region of southern Ethiopia — an African herdsman — living in a mud hut by the side of the road. Imagine that you walk out your doorway into the sunlight one morning, and there at 7 a.m., a bunch of "ferenges" ("foreigners" in Amharic, probably derived from "Frenchies") in…See More

Ethiopia-bound in 24 hours

Tomorrow afternoon I'll join the On the Ground Global crew at Chicago's O'Hare Airport for the long flight across an ocean and two continents, in preparation for the Run Across Ethiopia, which begins Sunday morning in Addis Ababa. I feel as giddy as a child before a holiday road trip. I'll pen a feature story for The Rotarian magazine and blog here and on GlenArborSun.com about this ambitious and exciting adventure. So check back between Jan. 9 and 20 for words, videos and photos that I and others from the On the Ground Global team will post from the trail.

Cultural differences, confusing politics, military checkpoints, consoling worried family back home.
