Shakespeare in the Park

This weekend Riverside Productions presents its annual Shakespeare play here in downtown Traverse City. My daughter and I look forward to this every summer. Whatever the play, it’s always a great way to spend a couple of hours. The setting is idyllic—Hannah Park—along the banks of the Boardman River. We pack a picnic, spread a blanket and prepare to laugh at mistaken identities, plays on words and general buffoonery. With the exception of last year’s “Romeo and Juliet” the plays are generally co… Continue

Catch a Shooting Star

The annual Perseid meteor shower hits its peak tonight and into tomorrow morning. At peak you can expect to see up to 60 meteors an hour. Given the leaden skies outside my window this afternoon it doesn't look too promising for star gazing tonight in Northern Michigan. Hopefully the clouds will roll out tonight and we can spread our blankets in the backyard tomorrow night and gaze heavenward. Maybe we'll catch the tail end of the show. If you're blessed with clear skies in your neck of the wood… Continue

Good Night, Moon

Last night was the full moon, so I rallied a group of friends and neighbors for a hike to Pyramid Point in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We do this a few times throughout the year, but last night was especially good. The sky was clear, and the night air was comfortably cool. I was surprised to find a half dozen other cars in the parking lot when we arrived. Then I was even more surprised to find that all those other hikers were heading home as we made our way up the trail. They we… Continue

Michael Moore's Favorite Movies at the Traverse City Film Festival

Just home from the special screening for the Film Festival volunteers. I wanted to share a few of the highlights of the presentation. We saw "A Matter of Size", a charming Israeli film about an overweight man who becomes interested in sumo wrestling. If you have a chance to see it you won't be disappointed. It would be a welcome respite from some of the heavier hitting fare at the festival. I'm so happy to have a pair of tickets to "Woodstock--the Director's Cut". Warner Brothers isn't showing… Continue

Summer Reading Picks Say Yes to Michigan

Looking for a good summer read? How about a Michigan-based book? I have two on my bookshelf this summer. Both titles have been chosen by regional literacy initiatives, so we’ll be hearing a lot about them in coming months. Traverse City Reads’ 2009 selection is The Living Great Lakes: Searching for the Heart of the Inland Seas by local author Jerry Dennis. Book clubs, community groups and students throughout Northern Michigan will be reading The L… Continue

Hi Jodi , I’m the Internal Communication Director for the Michigan FairTax Assn. As you’re aware, our state legislature has recently enacted the Michigan Business Tax [MBT] as a response to ending the Single Business Tax [SBT] (a gross receipts tax). Our goal is to inform Michiganders about a proposed Michigan FairTax alternative that would both simplify, and stimulate, Michigan's business / jobs climate in order to stem the mass-emigration of businesses and families currently taking place.

The proposed Michigan FairTax would REPLACE the income tax and current sales tax, with a consumption tax (sales tax at point of retail sale). Under this plan, no more state tax will be withheld from Michigan wage-earners' paychecks. What's more, every Michigan resident-family will receive a monthly "prebate" check, in amount based on family size. This will ensure that NO Michigan family will EVEN BEGIN paying the MI FairTax on goods / services unless, or until, they exceed poverty-level spending.

Under the MI FairTax plan, points of collection are substantially reduced to just retailers, many of whom are already collecting sales tax. Because service providers must account for income tax withholding and compliance costs, their prices carry a hidden tax which a FairTax will make visible. (Business-to-business purchases would not carry the tax, as this would, again, hide the cost of taxation in prices.)

Because of the "prebate" (advance rebate calculated as .0975 x $ [poverty level spending per family size]) to ALL Michigan-resident households, the MI FairTax rate would effectively be 0% on all monthly family spending to the poverty level; thereafter it's 9.75%. A reasonably inferred average effective rate would be ~5.5% (see p.2 of pdf brochure, also review an economic analysis [pdf] on MI FairTax effects prepared by the Hillsdale Policy Group).

Why the FairTax idea is right for America's working families.

Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff believes that it will take the FairTax to reverse unfunded obligations, now above $53 trillion and counting!

Welcome, Jodi! It is really easy to start a group. You might consider a Library group where you guys can share dialog, ideas, discussion, etc. I'd also like to start groups for individual schools. I think that would be a really fun way for everyone affiliated with a school to have discussions, share photos and videos, etc. Maybe once we go public, you could start one for your school and I'll start one for Leland and we'll just see how it goes.
