Looking through my kitchen window of the Korner Kottage Bed and Breakfast is always a special treat this time of year. From that window, as the last rays of light melt away into darkness, all the glowing little Christmas lights in the distance, begin to light up the night time view. The twinkling little lights, on all the trees and in all the shop windows, invite diners, shoppers and passersby to stop, pause and take a closer look at what our little village has to offer..... especially this time… Continue

After a few "very busy months", life at the Korner Kottage Bed and Breakfast is much quieter now. We had another record breaking summer/fall season, even despite the unpredictable cooler, wetter, weather. We feel so very blessed. Thank you to all our wonderful guests, (first time visitors or repeat friends) who continue to find us along scenic M~22. The quaint village of Suttons Bay, along with the wonderful wineries, restaurants and unique shops has become quite the tourist destination. Our Ko… Continue

The proposed Michigan FairTax would REPLACE the income tax and current sales tax, with a consumption tax (sales tax at point of retail sale). Under this plan, no more state tax will be withheld from Michigan wage-earners' paychecks. What's more, every Michigan resident-family will receive a monthly "prebate" check, in amount based on family size. This will ensure that NO Michigan family will EVEN BEGIN paying the MI FairTax on goods / services unless, or until, they exceed poverty-level spending.
Under the MI FairTax plan, points of collection are substantially reduced to just retailers, many of whom are already collecting sales tax. Because service providers must account for income tax withholding and compliance costs, their prices carry a hidden tax which a FairTax will make visible. (Business-to-business purchases would not carry the tax, as this would, again, hide the cost of taxation in prices.)
Because of the "prebate" (advance rebate calculated as .0975 x $ [poverty level spending per family size]) to ALL Michigan-resident households, the MI FairTax rate would effectively be 0% on all monthly family spending to the poverty level; thereafter it's 9.75%. A reasonably inferred average effective rate would be ~5.5% (see p.2 of pdf brochure, also review an economic analysis [pdf] on MI FairTax effects prepared by the Hillsdale Policy Group).

Why the FairTax idea is right for America's working families.
Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff believes that it will take the FairTax to reverse unfunded obligations, now above $53 trillion and counting!
Glad your friends checked in! What a perfect time to be in northern Michiggan though. It is magical.
Heading over to the VI to have dinner with Gary. Talk/Tweet/Post with you soon.
I like you picture too!
Haven't talked with Gary, but I'm sure he is aware of the open house. I'm heading out to Northern Lumber and then down to the store for a bit. Have lots of books to ship!
Tomorrow will be the day when it is not a good idea to get in line behind me!

When I got home I realized how "holiday" I felt. Not the gifty kind, but the loving kind. On Friday night I had watched, through the magical lens of a child-like awe of all things Santa, "The Polar Express." Yes, yes, yes, my chin quivered and the tears appeared on cue, and I experienced the dread when he lost the bell, and was relieved and filled with excitement when his sister handed him the last box, the unexpected gift. As he pulled open the bow lifting the lid to find the lost bell sitting inside I let out a held breath, and I sat frozen, staring at the screen, waiting, and the tears flowed as he brought the bell to his ear and shook it. And it rang. He shook it again, and my heart skipped a beat as I listened to the sound of that bell, wanting to hear it over and over again. Yes, believing. You can only hear the bell if you believe in the spirit of Christmas. And in my own way when I was sitting in your parlor last night I felt that child-like magic of Christmas, being with all of you, the immediate comfort of talking and giggling with friends, the music, the twinkling lights, the decorations, the little tree on the table next to me, the art on the walls, all of it was part of my "bell." I'm glad I hear "my bell" ringing when I pick up the phone and hear Jim say, "Hey, we're having an impromptu at the Korner Kottage......." and without hesitation say, "I'll be there."
And like the young child in the movie, he was chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas, and last night at the Korner Kottage was my first gift of Christmas. Thank you for keeping the sound of friendship so magical.
