Ghosts Included

Posted on March 31, 2012 at 12:38pm 0 Comments

It's an odd thing, to wonder if the ghosts are mad at you.

We are selling the house. Yes, the house we labored over (and under), the one we restored with our own sweat and bulging biceps (ahem), the house that we thought we'd be in forever. (And ever.)

Why, why, why would we sell…

42 Best Eats: One Down (The Hatch)

Posted on March 12, 2012 at 11:48am 0 Comments

We peeled our winter bodies out from too-tight bathing suits Saturday afternoon to try our first official Eat. If you haven't been following along, my husband and I have decided to try each of the 42 Best Eats listed in the March 2012 issue of Traverse Magazine, and even though we were in TC to shake off the winter blues at Great Wolf Lodge, we knew there was no time like the present for digging into America's favorite vegetable: fries.

We chose Slabtown Burgers' hand-cut fries…

42 Best Eats: Challenge Accepted

Posted on March 6, 2012 at 1:30pm 1 Comment

I'd gone up to bed early to catch that perfect hour of pre-exhaustion reading. I had my Traverse Magazine and my book. I never got to the book.

I nearly wrote that I "flipped through" Traverse, but no, that's not right. I made a full stop on each page, not to look for my byline (ahem) but to get into the nitty gritty of each image. The art, the photos, the concepts in March's issue are gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, that I almost passed the story. The story that, just in its…

Maid Need Not Apply: Settling In

Posted on February 28, 2011 at 9:40pm 1 Comment

And in the end, a woman still does get up when it's dark out, before the children wake and before the cars drive in earnest toward their parking spots downtown, to tip-toe down the back stair in the chill and dark. She puts a dish of oatmeal into the oven so that the aroma of the berry-covered crisp crust wakes the family. She puts in a half-hour on the treadmill. She looks around the mudroom and the backyard, her view from the treadmill, and plots projects for the spring. A playhouse. A…

We'll Have To Find A New Room For The Maid: The End

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 11:23am 1 Comment

In the end, I'm writing this story from a room I could never imagine, in a house I couldn’t visualize. And maybe it’s because we’ve been going so fast, so often, but it seems completely natural that this is my room. It seems as if it’s been my room all along.…

Lisa, great volume 2! During a recent visit to Petoskey, we drove past your house. It is an awesome work-in-progress. I love the photos and details you provide. Quite a "find" and in a beautiful location.

There have been a couple instances where people have used the comment feature to solicit for their business or their cause. We strongly encourage everyone to remember that this is a social community, designed for people to share ideas, events, stories, photos and videos about Northern Michigan.

If you part of are a business or organization, the best way to get people to become engaged with you in a social community is to participate as a member. Share your events with photos and videos, but also, share your expertise in a Forum. Comment in ways that provides insight to other members as opposed to outright solicitation. You'll not only find that approach garners you more fans and probably more business, you will also enjoy your participation in this community all about Up North.

Questions? Concerns? Send them my way! And it's wonderful to have you in the community.
