Thanksgiving Day pondering....homelessness

I live such a remarkable life and have found myself more and more thinking about the homeless population in this area. I know they have resources available to them, but my guess is that there is quite a shortfall of money and time given to their needs. I'm curious...when people without homes must live outside in this area, do they camp in known places? I've heard rumors, or course, but never anything concrete. I would guess they need all kinds of things in this weather and I am wondering if…See More

"I've asked around about this in the past, and of my husband who works with a population susceptible to homelessness. It sounds like dropping clothing, etc. off right at Goodwill Inn would be really helpful. This is not the Goodwill store,…"

Local Talk Radio

I've thought for years that to make local talk radio more cordial, civilized, and honest they ought to have an on-air counterpoint to all their political sludge. I see most of their hosts essentially as cowards when it comes to politics....they love the mic, but let's see what happens if there is someone there every day to offer up antidotes to their skewed pronouncements. They have not advanced the public discourse beyond their own myopia. Such a shame and a waste of energy all the way around.See More

Sledding

Posted on October 20, 2009 at 7:14pm 2 Comments

I'm going pro-active this winter. I spend a good deal of time on snowshoes, but came away last winter slightly bored with all of it. I made a purchase yesterday to hopefully change all that. I bought a Hammerhead cherry max sled and plan on finding new ways to break bones. I'm still about 8 years old inside and the prospect of using this new sled (which someone said was "wicked fast") on some backcountry hills was something I had to indulge.I'm wondering if there are any local ski areas which… Continue

Flies only on the Boardman....

Posted on October 13, 2009 at 11:56am 1 Comment

it's time to institute a flies only, catch and release section on the Boardman. This river, highly touted as a blue ribbon trout stream, has no special regulations. It's time to move it up a notch and start developing larger and more abundant species of trout. I'd love to see it in the middle section of the river, for selfish reasons, and for the fact that from Garfield Road to Beitner there is very little access, so fewer bait fishermen would have to comply.

If you drive in the left lane on a divided highway.....

such as driving into Traverse City on 31 north....don't drive under the speed limit. For some reason I ALWAYS find myself behind someone going 45 or less who either has no sense of a rear view mirror, or is out to act as a traffic slow-down hazard. It's frustrating, and worse, dangerous to clog that lane. Move over. Perhaps we should institute the art of flashing as is done in Europe. A driver behind you who wants to pass flashes his high beams and you move over...simple as that.
