Friske's is such a lovely place. I had to stop just to see what was coming in from the farm, but it's also a great place for breakfast or lunch ... or meet a business colleague for coffee ... or entertain kids for half a day!

cushion crisis averted garden bliss on the horizon

My friends, the balance of the previously ordered patio cushions mysteriously arrived at our local Pier 1, unannounced, unexpected and oddly paid for, meaning my account had not been immediately credited when they thought the order couldn't be filled. For those of you tuning in to this miniseries at the last hour on the thrilling Sunday-night conclusion, I have searched far and wide looking for patio cushions to fit my hubby's childhood patio furniture set. And I've been thwarted several times.… Continue

sunset in omena

There are iconic moments Up North. As my daughter and I were driving home, the setting sun lit the sail of a boat in Omena Bay. As we passed two freshly painted Adirondack chairs, I hit the breaks. For once we weren't in a hurry to be anywhere so I could capture the scene. Continue

sunny shopping in traverse city

Remember our sunny week last week? Here are a few snaps of the bustle of Traverse City streets mid-day. Things were really hopping! And it was beautiful. Continue

can't beat a bed & breakfast up north

When I got married, several of my friends stayed at the Sunset Lodge in Omena. My daughter and I visited last week when I was dropping off MyNorth Wedding issues there. (ironic that) And Linda gave us a tour including a new social hall that they've opened up.

very cherry

Recently I delivered some of our “I’d Rather Be Up North” coffee cups to Benjamin Twiggs. While I was there, I found these very cherry delights. Who can resist chocolate covered cherries.

And the apron is charming in the adult size… Continue

aw, I'm going to miss Betty's posts! I did appreciate the perspective. I think I mentioned in a comment something to knowing the value of brevity. They were good and nice writing on your part. Some days, with her reference to roomies and seemingly playful jaunts, I thought Betty might be a college student or post-grad. On other days, she reminded me of a woman named Lydia who led the hikes of my local Sierra Club chapter. Lydia was in her 70's at the time, a joyful spirit and could walk circles around us. I thought Betty might be another Lydia - mindful, awake, timeless, open to adventure and the occasional tumbling down a snowy hill. For you, as a writing exercise, it was probably a fun gig, which now makes me wonder - where in each pieces does Betty end...and Rachel begin? Perhaps, that is another reflection essay for you to consider. Coffee in TC? Sounds great. We get up that several times each year. I'll keep you posted. I drank a lot of joe in TC last year. Just depends which part of town I stand in with Espresso Bay at one end and Good Harbor at the other...best, Darren (p.s. thanks for reading my other work)

Rachel,
Sure. I do post all of our events on the calendar here. There is also a Northern Michigan Moms social network that you might want to include if you can. It is a ning.com site and I think that the Petoskey News Review is involved with that group. I just found out about the group yesterday and signed up to be a member. You may wish to check that out

Thank you, Rachel. Fustini's has had a good winter!
We are planning to have our 3rd tasting dinner with Hanna late this spring.
I will be sure to put it on mynorth.com calendar when we have more details.
We have been invited to be at the Festival of Tables in May, where we will be offering our oils & balsamics for tasting.
When you have time, venture across the street to try some.
We'd love to see you.

Thank you, Rachel. The truth is that I just don't have the word power to adequately describe the beaty of the wolves I've seen in the wild (5 yrs. as team tracker for the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians and the prodigously titled Northern Michigan Wolf Detection and Habitat Survey Team), or for those I've been blessed to help care for in captivity. For Cheanne Chellis, "Wolf Lady" isn't a mere title, but a description of who this wild-natured and intelligent woman really is. The wolf is her spirit brother, and their species couldn't have a more devoted or well-informed defender.
