dancing with dad then, and now at the Zonta Father Daughter Dance in Traverse City

Posted on March 26, 2014 at 7:30pm 0 Comments

Dad wanted to Fox Trot, but I didn't know how. I'd only had one ballroom dance lesson and it was months earlier. Everyone was watching and I didn't want my first dance with Dad to be me watching his feet trying to keep up, so he acquiesced to just swinging side to side.

On that day, my…

“Anything that makes my wife more comfortable skiing, is good,” said Jim Galliger walking into an ad agency conference room for a meeting. 1988. We’d been scoffing about ski boots with battery powered heaters in them. And Jim shut the conversation down.

It is one of the sexiest, most romantic things I’ve ever…

first and last times skiing northern michigan, a parent's milestone maker

Posted on January 12, 2014 at 9:00pm 0 Comments

Before you’re a mom, other parents will tell you, “it goes by so fast.” No one has any advice for slowing it down. As they think about it though, one can see them just launch into a mental slideshow of milestone moments whizzing by. They say things like, “I remember when my daughter wasn’t sleeping …

tubing in traverse city--new year's eve northern michigan style

Posted on January 1, 2014 at 1:31am 0 Comments

“You have very well-behaved children,” said a man nodding to the table and smiling as he walked out of the restaurant on New Year’s Eve. I could only smile. I felt guilty taking credit for the seven children round the table. In truth a friend of mine and I had just taken his kids, mine, and friends of our kids tubing…

Hi Rachel, it was very kind of you to drop a note. I hope this one finds you well, enjoying your beautiful bay.  I love TC in the early morning hours.  What's happ'n? Oh, the usual really; work and family. Gratefully, all is well here.  I went to a Dave Matthews Band concert last night so I’m tired this morning and at once feel a great sense of possibility! Which I suppose is the measure of a good concert.  Work demands are great, reading seems a luxury, haven’t written it seems in years, but I stop in at MyNorth from time to time and recently, learned and was saddened to hear about your brother.  I was moved by your beautiful essay.  Please know my thoughts are with you and your family…

I'm planning to make a couple of visits to Sleeping Bear this summer/ fall which is always a deep source of joy for me, my family. All our years there, our trips - one memory for me now.  And with each return I experience it just as T.S. Eliot said our exploring would be; “to arrive where we started.  And know the place for the first time.”

I'll try not to stay away for so long...

Take care,

Darren

Couldn't agree more.  In fact, I feel like I looked at that very scene last time we were in Fishtown, but the light was nothing like what you captured.

It does all of that and more. One is forced to grieve for the person, even though he is sitting there looking at you. It is such a difficult, incomplete, frustrating type of grief--fingernails-on-a-blackboard grief. I miss him so terribly sometimes, especially in the fall, when he would recite that poem. Yes, it did help. The tears felt OK. Again, thank you.

Rachel, Thank you so very much. I had not tried a search for it this year. Last year was a bust, so I presumed it would be this year as well. My Father, now 91 and with Alzheimer's, would recite the poem for me every fall as I grew up--as I read the poem, I could hear his voice; see his facial emphasis. This one line is the only one that stuck in my memory. His memory is now a thing of the past. When he first contracted the illness, I tried to learn the author from him, but he had it wrong. I am so pleased you took the time to check it out for me. It means so much more than I can relate in a post like this.
