Bernie at Lars Hockstead Auditorium

Have I mentioned that I love my job? It hardly seems fair that while my friends are waiting on tables, or working at the marina, yesterday afternoon I "had" to go see the movie Bernie for MyNorth.com. It was noon and the sun was at its peak, and I was glad to escape in to the dark and cool Lars Hockstead, where the vintage school furnishings (the auditorium is part of Central Grade School, which was built in the early twenties) were oddly appropriate for the funerary themed Bernie.A little…See More

MyNorth.com's Thea Senger Attends "Margaret" at the 8th Traverse City Film Festival

"Alone?" My fellow intern Eliza and I looked at each other in dismay as the word hung in the air before us, taking up too much space in our small office. "Yes you guys are going to the movies alone, that way we can maximize the number of films seen by MyNorth staffers." Our supervisor/ writing guru Lindsey said. "It'll be fun!" In college, there really isn't much that you do alone. We share rooms, bathrooms, sorority functions, study nooks, eat, blow off steam and work out together- in short,…See More

Competition is a funny thing. At the beginning of an athletic event like the Bayshore Marathon 10K, you are getting in battle mode, scoping out the people you're going to beat to the finish line. That girl you wish were as skinny as, the middle aged couple wearing the race day t-shirts to the race (major running faux pas), the boy in Michigan State gear (please pal, I'm a wolverine)- all of them become markers for your own personal success. If I can come in before them, you think, I will have…See More

Tasting Traverse- A Family Tradition

I am beginning to believe that every family has some kind of collective pastime; an activity that they all enjoy doing together that in some way expresses their familial style. There are outdoorsy families who go on group hikes, studious families who visit the Dennos every weekend, families with weekly game night- the list goes on. So I'm not sure what it says that if I was pressed to pick one activity that represents my own family dynamic, I would be forced to say "eating". It's true though-…See More

Getting ready to "Run" Traverse City's Bayshore Marathon!

No matter how slowly they are going, never ever call a runner a jogger. We take it very personally. In fact, going slowly can be made into a good thing- we're just "pacing" ourselves for the obviously forthcoming burst of blinding speed at the end of the race. Maybe.  I was definitely "pacing" myself last week, while on a training run down Peninsula Drive. In just six short days, my roommate Taylor and I will be competing in the Bayshore Marathon 10k. Held on the Saturday of Memorial Day…See More

Springtime Comes to Ann Arbor

Today was one of the first truly nice afternoons we have had in a long time; after a winter of oscillation between freezing rain and thick sticking snow, the sun finally appeared in Ann Arbor. It was sixty six, the breeze was gentle, and it seemed like almost every student was taking a break from the books to sprawl out in the Diag. It seemed like the perfect time to test out the course for the 5k my sorority will be hosting in a few weeks. The run will be benefitting Breast Cancer Research,…See More
