Lena Maude Wilson a promising singer-songwriter

Lena Maude Wilson has a realistic outlook on what it means to be a singer-songwriter, though maybe she's a bit too modest. She wrote this in response to a Facebook interview: "I've attempted to reach out but it's hard to get responses. Who am I anyway? There's certainly good reasons to be apprehensive about 'up and coming' singer-songwriters."Yes, there are a lot of them; seemingly more all the time.Yet Lena Maude is definitely worth a listen. You can hear and see more on…See More

Steve Buse's colorful, whimsical art at the library

Note:I use the word 'dark' in the lead paragraph here. Steve was gracious about the blog post, but doesn't like the word. He believes it implies mystically dark or evil, which is not what I intend. I mean stark and brooding at times, but definitely not dark dark.Steve Buse's paintings are sometimes dark, but always with…See More

Michigan, don't be too cheesed at Wisconsin

Many of my fellow Michiganders are up in arms because Wisconsin has a new promo claiming the state looks like a mitten. Well, everyone knows that Michigan is the state that really looks like a hand. But I do want to ask people in my state to be nice. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.Besides, we…See More

No, they didn't kidnap Ozzy

One big hurdle for a tribute act is whether or not the singer/band look like the artist being imitated. In The Name Of - a Black Sabbath tribute band that includes Dave Hall of Cedar on Bass - has Ozzy Osbourne nailed. That's Eddie Janes of the Flint area on vocals in this new promo vid, both looking and sounding like the Oz-meister. And really, once you've got the front man, who else do you need to get? Do you know what Tony Iommi looks like? Do you know anybody who knows what Geezer Butler…See More

An artists' artist

Lindy Bishop likes to paint musicians, singers and songwriters while they're performing. Every month, she invites an aural artist to Seed Studio/Gallery in Elk Rapids to entertain the visual artists while they capture it on canvass or sketchpad. She does it on the…See More

Hot time at the Lip Dub

I have to hand it to these young women for being so energetic. This was at the beginning of at least the third - and I believe final - take at the Lip Dub on Sunday.By the time I took the picture, I was ready for a Slurpee and a hammock. Temperatures were in the 90s with the humidity pushing it up into sauna range. The Lip Dub is kind…See More
