An RMI below 50 indicates that more remodelers say market activity is lower compared to the prior quarter than report it is higher. The RMI has been running below 50 since the final quarter… Continue

WASHINGTON, April 26 - The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) wants members of the military, foreign service and intelligence communities to know that they may have an additional year to buy a home and claim the home buyer tax credit, which expires for most Americans on April 30.
The law provides qualified service members who served on official extended duty outside of the United States for 90 days or more at any time between Jan. 1, 2009, to April 30, 2010, another year to… Continue

Compared to conventional financial investments that rise and fall with regular frequency, housing has proven to be a stable and sound investment. During National Remodeling Month in May, consider upgrading your home to increase your family’s comfort and at the… Continue

Consumer interest has grown significantly over the years for homes that offer energy-efficiency and cost-savings — that also have minimal environmental impact on the earth. But will they pay for it?
According to a recent survey of more than 500 builders by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the answer is, not necessarily.
“Although we are seeing significant interest in green building, cost effectiveness is clearly a key concern among home buyers,” said NAHB… Continue

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 - Nationwide housing production fell 10.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 529,000 units in October as builders awaited word on whether an important home buyer incentive would be extended, according to data released today by the U.S. Commerce Department.
"As of October, the deadline for starting a home that could be completed in time for purchasers to take advantage of the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit had come and gone, and builders had… Continue

WASHINGTON, June 22 - Using foreclosed and distressed sales as comparables with appraisals on single-family homes without adequately reflecting the differences in the condition of the respective properties is needlessly driving down home values, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
"Any home buyer can recognize the difference between a well-kept home and a distressed property that is damaged or not properly maintained. So it only makes sense that an… Continue

In the 20 years that the Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area has produced the Parade of Homes, over $250K has been given back to the community. The HBA utilizes local non-profit organizations to host each Parade Home and then rewards the organization with a stipend as a thank you for their service. Many local non-profit organizations use this as a primary fundraiser for their group to raise money for their cause. Much of the money… Continue

My husband and I are starting our second renovation project in two years. After 26 years of marriage, we feel that our relationship can finally withstand it. A year ago we remodeled our kitchen. This renovation is for two bathrooms that haven’t been updated since Hubert Humphrey ran against Richard Nixon in 1968. That is excepting the red magic marker graffiti my son scribbled on the wallpaper when he was 4 in 2001.
Our contractor, Kevin McCarty of… Continue

Saturday, November 1, dawned bright and warm. The autumn leaves were beautiful--still plenty of golds and reds, and Lake Michigan was a summery shade of turquoise. It was a perfect day for the first Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour. At 11 am, when I pulled up to kitchen #17, located deep in the Leelanau County countryside, and found that 35 people had already been there I was convinced the tour was going to be a success.
Less than an hour later, 75 people had found their way to kitchen… Continue

More excitement over the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour this week ... Yesterday TV 7 & 4 filmed Steve Cobb (Wolf/Subzero Northern Michigan rep) and me in kitchen # 14 on the tour. The kitchen is one of my faves--it's way out at the end of Old Mission Peninsula with views of a vineyard and East Bay. It's a warm sophisticated cottage look with wonderful vintage-looking cabinets, a gleaming white porcelain farmhouse sink and granite that looks like oatmeal raisin cookies (yes, it makes you… Continue

Things are really heating up for the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour, Saturday, November 1. Yesterday, our marketing director, Rachel North, and I headed down to Grand Rapids so that I could talk about the tour on Channel 13's Take Five morning show. That meant waking up at 3:30 am and hitting the road by 4:30 am.
The show went well--live television jitters and all. We talked about the tour as a great excuse for a girls' weekend Up North. Really, I think that would be very fun. If you… Continue

Sixteen days until the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour (it's November 1 from 9 am to 5 pm in case you haven't heard yet!) We've been working on it for over a year, scouting kitchens, printing tickets and maps ... This morning I was on Mary in the Morning (106.7 FM) to talk about it along with Nancy Blandford, the National Kitchen and Bath Association chairperson of the event. We had a great time on the air and I was reminded again how cool these kitchens are. All 19 of them are different--from… Continue
