Watch for Hidden Costs: Comparing New Homes to Foreclosures

The economic downturn has hurt many American families during the past few years, and sadly that means there are a larger number of foreclosed homes on the market than during a healthy economy. The lower price of these homes can make them look like a bargain, but home buyers  need to carefully compare the actual cost—and advantages—of a newly constructed home versus a foreclosed one before you buy.

During an educational seminar at the 2012…

Maid Need Not Apply: Settling In

And in the end, a woman still does get up when it's dark out, before the children wake and before the cars drive in earnest toward their parking spots downtown, to tip-toe down the back stair in the chill and dark. She puts a dish of oatmeal into the oven so that the aroma of the berry-covered crisp crust wakes the family. She puts in a half-hour on the treadmill. She looks around the mudroom and the backyard, her view from the treadmill, and plots projects for the spring. A playhouse. A…

Green Finishes

Green Finishes

There are many options for “green” interior finishes available. The following are selection pointers for sustainable choices.

Acoustical Panels

When selecting acoustical panels, considerations should include durability and flexibility, low or no toxicity in the panel fabric, and recycled content in both panel and fabric.

Acoustical ceiling tiles often have recycled content and are recyclable. At least one ceiling tile…

We'll Have To Find A New Room For The Maid: A Victorian House Remodel In Petoskey, Vol. 5

May the roof above us never fall in
And may we good companions beneath it never fall out.
Irish Blessing

As I write, as the rain pours down in buckets and the wind blows branches from the trees, as the dark sky gets darker (it is past bedtime for the grown-ups, even), there are people at our house with tarps and strips of plastic, frantically trying to make wet concrete dry. There is no roof over their heads. There are no…

We'll Have To Find A New Room For The Maid: A Victorian House Remodel In Petoskey, Vol. 3

On a crisp fall morning, before the sun was up to light the bay, before the trains began running and the town below became a hustle-bustle of resorters starting their journeys home, and perhaps around the same time that Ignatius Petoskey himself greeted the dawn, a woman in a starch-stiff apron rolled out the dough for the day’s bread in the small, closed-off kitchen at 105 Division…

Unlicensed Builders Are a Disaster Waiting to Happen

Spring not only brings flowers and warmer weather, it also brings out the unlicensed contractor looking to rip you off.

Under Michigan law, all contractors offering to do work which totals $600 or more in labor and materials must be licensed by the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG). A Residential Builders license allows a contractor to build a complete structure and do maintenance or alteration (remodeling) work. A Maintenance & Alteration license… Continue
