My new little friend

One thing I've noticed at the cabin, I can't stop claiming ownership of everything.  That is MY pine tree, that is MY Downy Woodpecker and this is MY clean air.  So I guess it's no surprise as I discovered a little baby red squirrel that I became a "proud mama" who had to share photos with all her friends of MY baby.

I mistakenly discovered my new baby as I was searching through my binoculars for eagles one day from the cabin deck.  A furry little head caught my eye.…

Winter Birding

One of the things I look forward to on our winter weekends to our cabin, is the bird watching opportunities this season brings. The feeders get a little busier and I look forward to some of my favorite friends returning such as the redpolls and pine siskins. Recently I was thrilled to get a photo of the pileated woodpecker (pictured above.) I cannot tell you how many times I have reached for my camera and this bird goes screeching off, I swear…

A dog made for Northern Michigan

This was Scout's first winter in northern Michigan. To see my puppy's joy this winter made me love northern Michigan even more. True to her Bernese Mountain nature, she thrived on diving into snow drifts and letting snow flakes decorate her fur. As soon as another fresh snowfall commenced, her nose was pressing against the glass window of our cabin with backwards glances at me and heavy sighs to hurry up and get out there.

We had so… Continue

Going Green at Home: Step I

I am excited by the notion that we may be entering an era where we truly regard our fellow Americans as brothers and sisters, one in which we are willing to unite to address issues that affect all of us, one that looks and behaves like a national village.

It goes without saying that we are concerned as a nation about the economy. If you’re like me you are ready to act and you guess that there are others out there who are also ready to start acting locally towards making a difference.… Continue

Flowers For Mental Health

Today I took a bouquet of flowers to work with me. Normally, I don’t pick bouquets for myself. With my weekly subscription service, I have so many bouquets to make each week that at the end of a long day, the thought of making one more just doesn’t cut it. But with things slowing down, I found the time last night to wander through the garden and clip a fistful of bright blooms for myself. It’s a well-known fact that having flowers around is good for one’s mental health. After this… Continue
