In my quest to bring more of you who live in Grand Traverse County and surrounding counties downtown, two Labor Day’s ago the Traverse City Labor Day Bridge(s) Walk began.  This kind of welcoming family-friendly walk provides the opportunity for all to rediscover the beauty of town by traversing the perimeter, including crossing over four bridges, viewing the Boardman River and the Grand Traverse Bay almost the entire way, and realizing that when the trails are messy and muddy or too buggy,…

For the second year, guided community walks will be offered aimed at the esthetics of the area, taking time to enjoy the glorious sites these walking trails provide. Hopefully you can join us for these hikes which are about 3-4 miles in length, as well as moderate in difficulty.  Each week offers a different experience.

The first hike will be on May 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Hickory Meadows parking lot (at the end of Randolph St. in town).  This is an amazing area to walk in…

University of Michigan Biological Station: The Manic Echo at Sunset

A few friends and I decided to take our rowboat out to the middle of Douglas Lake. It’s sunset, and the air is cool – but not too cool. Gray clouds obstruct the colors in thick, ridged, stony stripes. All four…

Traverse City Film Festival -- Behind the Screens with the New Foreign Jury

It's almost noon on Sunday, two days before the start of the 7th Traverse City Film Festival.  The New Foreign Jury has just watched the French film Queen to Play.  Leave it to the French to make chess sexy.  Queen to Play makes my jury's eighth foreign film so far. We've been ensconced in the cozy 35-seat Dutmers Theatre at the Dennos Museum on the southwest edge of NMC's campus since Friday morning.  All in all we'll have seen eleven films by the end of tonight.  After a…

Unlicensed Builders Are a Disaster Waiting to Happen

Spring not only brings flowers and warmer weather, it also brings out the unlicensed contractor looking to rip you off.

A Residential Builders license allows a contractor to build a complete structure and do maintenance or alteration (remodeling) work. A Maintenance & Alteration license… Continue
