Rachel North poor man’s florist in northern Michigan

I’m a fiend for flowers. In winter I suffer the loss. In summer I draw them in the house like breath. And this year, watching my pennies, I tried to grow a cutting garden from seeds. Several packages were tenderly placed into the ground, some in the pattern of my daughter’s own initial. I hoped that she would look down from her window and see brightly colored blooms heralding her name. As one might imagine from the attention of this post, nothing surfaced. Cosmos, zinnias (two packages), poppie… Continue

Rachel North start the countdown to summer's end in northern michigan

It was Wednesday, I think when I heard them in Traverse City. A shudder went through me. A deep breath and I decided to dismiss the omen, thinking that's for here, in town. My house is still safe. And then today three times in Suttons Bay, that unmistakable whine of the locusts. When I lived in Missouri, the thirteen year cycle of locusts overlapped with the 17 year cycle. We were overrun. This was a once in a millennium kind of synchronicity and had more than a few folks keeping an ear out for… Continue

Rachel North one down, more to go

Not a day for yachting you say? Certainly not the most thrilling. Despite thick gray threatening clouds overhead, the Traverse City Yacht Club held it's Wednesday races. And despite the dead calm over Grand Traverse Bay the boats did make it back to the marina, eventually. And I was in attendance. Inspired by the June issue of Traverse Magazine, one of the items on my summer list was to enjoy a drink on the deck at Scott's Harbor Grill while watching the Wednesday yacht races. I invited… Continue

Rachel North first spark

I remember waiting as a kid to go Up North. And once there, usually after the summer solstice we had two weeks or so to do everything cool. Even later when I worked Up North in the summer, staying with Grandma for a month or more, it was a mad dash to squeeze as much as possible out of the short time here. Nothing has changed now that we live Up North. And yesterday marked the start of summer with our first dinner on the beach. We're late. Memorial Day usually initiates the first picnic. Starin… Continue

Sherry Sutherby Sounds of Summer

Every summer, a melodic sound can be heard in our woods. My favorite sound in the entire world ~ bar none. The HERMIT THRUSH. Ironically, the first sound of the season was heard on Mother's Day, for severa… Continue

Betty on the deck

I sat on the deck for the first time today. Snow is still piled in the corners at least 8 inches and sometimes 15 or 16 inches. there's a clear circle in the center where the sun concentrates it's energy. I just sat. Listening to the wind, the birds, smelling whatever. My roomie joined me for a bit. And we dreamed about warm evenings to come. Continue
