From The Pastor
Ah, can’t you just smell it—the turkey, the stuffing, the potatoes, the pie, Grandma’s perfume—the welcome smells of the Thanksgiving holiday. Well, until you’re done with dinner at which point the smells become nauseating, the site of the turkey carcass on the table haunts you, and Grandma’s perfume is giving you a headache. And this is to say nothing of the fact that the seams in your pants are ready to burst and send corduroy flying to the outer recesses of the dining r…

The Missions Committee at Suttons Bay Congregational Church is revising the traditional Giving Tree program this holiday season. Instead of putting out “ornaments” with items for you to purchase and wrap, the Missions Committee would like you to purchase Gift Cards (any dollar amount) from Meijer, Target, or Walmart. We will divide these up between 2 or 3 families. This way we can empower these families to
have the pleasure of shopping for their children and make sure of the correct sizes, color…

November’s Pastor’s Restaurant Tour is on Friday, November 20 at 5:30 PM at Stubb’s Sweetwater Grill Restaurant in Northport. We will meet in their party room, order off the menu, and have separate checks. (There is no additional cost for the use of their party room.) If you’ve never come to a Pastor’s Restaurant Tour—this would be a great time to start. Folks laughed so hard at the last one that their faces hurt when it was time to leave. Now that’s a good time! There is a sign-up sheet in the…

Ruthanne Wilson sold 30 of 54 Congo Cookie Mix Jars, resulting in a profit. Thank you to Barb Klein and Mary Houk for baking the samples for tasting. And many thanks to those who made and assembled the Congo Cookie Mix Jars, cut out fabric circles, etc. It takes many hands to make this a successful venture! These many hands belong to: Robin Long, Cathy Smith, Darlene Garland, Barb Krause, Emma Watson, Ruthanne Wilson, Buff Witteveen, and Jane Nichols. Your willingness to be a part of what we do…

The Quilt Show was spectacular – 200 plus attended on October 10th! Hats off to Joan Bell and Lois Stretlien for chairing the Quilt Show Committee – a huge job requiring many, many volunteer hours – and to the numerous others who helped make it a great success. And, congratulations to Sharon Glen, a friend of our own Judy Walter, whose lucky name was drawn and is now the proud owner of the wonderful quilt made by the women of our Church.
A special thanks to Connie Eisenhart and Nonie Steele who…

The Quilt Show! Saturday, October 10th, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. After months of preparation and hard work on the part of the Quilt Show Committee and others in our congregation, the exciting day went off without a hitch. A lunch of soup, salad, cookies and beverage was served downstairs for $5 from 11:00 a.m. Unofficial results indicated a very nice benefit.

My daughter and my mother spent the afternoon together. They went for a walk in the sun and found a small apple tree in a field. A rogue seed that had prospered alone. I imagined them tromping through the neon orange and yellow Maples, with sage-colored Cedars keeping time along the way. They picked the apples and carried them home. And once here, peeled them and sliced them into pot for applesauce. A spoonful of cinnamon, some sugar and a stool. It was a perfect Tasha Tudor moment.

I remember the day my mother and I started collecting Rookwood vases. She’d found an eight inch blue green Rookwood at the church rummage sale. It was neglected among kitchen things until a professional pricer hired by the church marked it $40. Listening to her say, “Oh that’s valuable,” my mother bought it that night.…

In my tour of farmers markets, I’ve learned a bit. Several of my friends have had a range of bad experiences, as have I. Sour fruit. Spoils before I can use it. Don’t know how to cook it. Gets damaged before I can get it home. Can’t get what I want or need. So I’ve got a few lessons that I’ve learned and I hope there are others who can add a few more ideas .…

If you’re a Northern Michigan foodie and you don’t know Martha Ryan, owner and chef at Martha’s Leelanau table in Suttons Bay, it’s time to meet her. I had my opportunity earlier this week when my husband and I gathered with seven of our closest friends at one of Martha’s cooking classes. It was on a weeknight and I have to say: What a way to close a workday!
The drive from my office in Traverse City to Suttons Bay was that glorious strip of M-22 that parallels Lake Michigan’s West Grand Traver…
