a fall tromp, a batch of applesauce & an afternoon in suttons bay with grandma

My daughter and my mother spent the afternoon together. They went for a walk in the sun and found a small apple tree in a field. A rogue seed that had prospered alone. I imagined them tromping through the neon orange and yellow Maples, with sage-colored Cedars keeping time along the way. They picked the apples and carried them home. And once here, peeled them and sliced them into pot for applesauce. A spoonful of cinnamon, some sugar and a stool. It was a perfect Tasha Tudor moment. Continue

petoskey artists studio tour at crooked tree art gallery

MyNorth participated in the "Thank You" party for the volunteers of the Crooked Tree Art Center Studio Tour last Saturday. More than 75 folks helped more than a dozen artists all over Emmet County meet and greet tour goers, showing them their personal studios and sharing insight into their methods and techniques. I must say that the group of artists and volunteers that gathered under a huge tent behind the Crooked Tree Art Center was one of the most stylish groups I've seen gathered in awhile. I… Continue

lights and dark, in search of traverse city style

It’s dark in my kitchen. The ballast in my kitchen light fixture is broken. And the dark has me thinking a lot about lights. In the last year we’ve been working hard to arrange and replace light fixtures. We’ve been taking advantage of some trends, setting our own style and pouring through copies of Northern Home & Cottage. And I keep an eye out for things I like along the way.… Continue

interlochen, kenny loggins, this is it

Mid-story, as Kenny Loggins was describing writing a song in a diner, I looked around at the faces of the audience. Riveted. Engaged. And at home with Kenny Loggins. And he was at home with us. Continue

dining by the water—leland

Waterfalls are magic. Romancing the Stone. Dragonfly. Eragon. In the movies, it seems there are treasures around waterfalls. There’s a wonderful waterfall by the Cove Restaurant in Leland where the Leland River falls over the dam as it descends into the Manitou passage of… Continue

finding treasure in traverse city—antiques, stories, memories

I remember the day my mother and I started collecting Rookwood vases. She’d found an eight inch blue green Rookwood at the church rummage sale. It was neglected among kitchen things until a professional pricer hired by the church marked it $40. Listening to her say, “Oh that’s valuable,” my mother bought it that night.… Continue

poor man’s florist in northern Michigan

I’m a fiend for flowers. In winter I suffer the loss. In summer I draw them in the house like breath. And this year, watching my pennies, I tried to grow a cutting garden from seeds. Several packages were tenderly placed into the ground, some in the pattern of my daughter’s own initial. I hoped that she would look down from her window and see brightly colored blooms heralding her name. As one might imagine from the attention of this post, nothing surfaced. Cosmos, zinnias (two packages), poppie… Continue

start the countdown to summer's end in northern michigan

It was Wednesday, I think when I heard them in Traverse City. A shudder went through me. A deep breath and I decided to dismiss the omen, thinking that's for here, in town. My house is still safe. And then today three times in Suttons Bay, that unmistakable whine of the locusts. When I lived in Missouri, the thirteen year cycle of locusts overlapped with the 17 year cycle. We were overrun. This was a once in a millennium kind of synchronicity and had more than a few folks keeping an ear out for… Continue

kickin' cancer out barndance in ellsworth pics

More than 600 people came through the big barn doors to dance and play at the Kickin' Cancer Out Barn Dance. The barn, built by Soper Construction is a story in and of itself with skylights, recycled lumber and more green building techniques. And on Saturday, July 18th, it was gussied up. Each horse stall area had businesses supporting the cause. There were rides on a beautiful horse named Ma Barker. Square dancing, live music from 2 bands, horse shoe throwing contests, kids games and silent auc… Continue
