Looking for a good summer read? How about a Michigan-based book? I have two on my bookshelf this summer. Both titles have been chosen by regional literacy initiatives, so we’ll be hearing a lot about them in coming months.
Traverse City Reads’ 2009 selection is
The Living Great Lakes: Searching for the Heart of the Inland Seas by local author Jerry Dennis. Book clubs, community groups and students throughout Northern Michigan will be reading
The Living Great Lakes between now and October. The book celebrates the treasures of our Great Lakes:
Using humor and excitement to entertain and educate, Dennis carries his readers on a voyage through the largest fresh surface water system on earth, the fragile nature of which was too long overlooked. Today, we understand that our health and our children’s inheritance depend on the wise management of this complex ecosystem. Water is a treasure and the Great Lakes are the mother lode. ---TC Reads
Read the book this summer, then come to the City Opera House in Traverse City on October 22 for Jerry Dennis’ presentation.
The other Michigan-centric book I’m reading this summer is
Stealing Buddha’s Dinner by Bich Minh Nguyen. It’s this year’s pick for
The Great Michigan Read--a book club for the entire state. With a statewide focus on a single book the program encourages Michiganders to learn more about their state, their history, and their society. The idea is timely. We could all use another reason to celebrate our great state of Michigan.
Nguyen emigrated with her family from Vietnam to Michigan in 1975.
Stealing Buddha’s Dinner is a memoir of her coming of age in Grand Rapids in the 1980s. Nguyen will be touring Michigan in October as part of The Great Michigan Read, and TC is one of her scheduled stops. Clear your calendar for October 14.
So, two good Michigan books to read this summer--while sun bathing at the beach or curled up on a rainy day at the cottage--and two great opportunities to meet the authors in October.
