I’ve spent the week working on the June issue of Northern Home & Cottage. It’s our Classic Cottage issue and it took some juggling to make it come together, but it has been worth all the work. One of the stories is about Anne Cottage (pictured above), a 32-room cottage/mansion on Mackinac Island’s Main Street. It’s one of those places that you can’t help trying to peek at through the gate as you’re walking by. The owner of Anne Cottage was incredibly generous about opening up the home to our photographer.

Anne Cottage is cool enough on its own, but the history of the property it sits on is fascinating—I won’t give it away, but suffice it to say that I spent a glorious afternoon immersed in research on 19th century literature as I was writing the story. To find out the details, you’ll have to pick up the June issue of TraverseNorthern Home & Cottage is inside.

I can’t sign off without telling you that we are also featuring a Bay View cottage—one of those Victorian head turners off U.S. 31 north of Petoskey. I have to confess that working on this issue has been like playing Barbie Dream House, only Up North style!

Elizabeth, this cottage is incredible! Calling it a cottage is rather a gross understatement (lol). We're fascinated by historical details on locations. I'll look forward to reading the June issue.

Kathleen,

The owner just wrote and told me that when it was built in 1899 it was called a "stately cottage." He figures that after all the additions it should be called a "stately cottage mansion." I guess I'd agree! Thanks for writing.

I just got off the phone with the owner Anne Cottage. He told me a Hollywood director is coming to Mackinac Island in May to film at Anne Cottage. And I'm invited to the filming! I'll keep MyNorth posted.
