Sleeping Bear Dunes Inspires Nautica Fashion Designers

The fashion giant, Nautica, came to Sleeping Bear Dunes to get inspiration for their 2011 men’s fall clothing line and they were not disappointed. Majestic dunes, vast Lake Michigan waters and the region’s Maritime history were all influential in the final clothing designs.

The resulting fashion collection includes the colors of sandstone, seashell, and various shades of grey that represent the beach and sand dunes. Deep blues and dark navy are characteristic of the deep waters of Lake Michigan. Splashes of “safety orange” are typical of the colors used by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Coast Guard. Dark, rich shades of grey represent the colors of the freighters that travel through the waterways of Sleeping Bear Dunes. It is also not surprising to also see nautical stripes, double-breasted jackets and boat shoes that are typical of a “sailor look”.
