The area around Munising, Michigan in the Central Upper Peninsula is home to the Midwest's largest concentration of climbable ice and fittingly, Michigan Ice Fest.
The weather this year has been less than cooperative, but there is so much ice in the Pictured Rocks region that organizers aren't worried. Plus, besides epic climbing, the Fest is known for the after climb camaraderie, gear giveaways, presentations by internationally-recognized climbers and free-flowing beer fountains. Yep, free beer.
This shot is from a few years ago on an ice formation known as "The Curtains." While not exactly a waterfall, it's an example of the nice ice that forms from groundwater seeps and snowmelt this time of year. Most waterfalls in the Munising area, even the tiny trickles, form into climbable ice pillars. Check out http://michiganicefest.com/ for more info.
