Event Description

‘Ease on down the road’ to see Leland Public School Drama’s spring musical production of THE WIZ. Directed by Jeremy John Evans, a cast of seventy students has pulled out all the stops to bring you this magical spectacle in the Leland Performing Arts Center.

Performances are at 7:00 pm on May 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 & 10. Matinee performances are at 2:00 pm on May 2 & 9. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/children and may be purchased in advance or reserved by calling Leland Public School’s box office at 256-3815.

Audiences will love this alternative of the family favorite, The Wizard of Oz. This modern, jazzy musical remains faithful to L. Frank Baum’s story and follows Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man to the magical land of Oz, where the language is reminiscent of the early 80’s and the songs are upbeat rhythmy blues.
---
The musical begins on the farm in Kansas but quickly moves to a magical land when a tornado sets Dorothy and her dog Toto (played by “Brody”) down in a very urban OZ. After celebrating the demise of the Wicked Witch of the East with the munchkins, Dorothy departs for the Emerald City with a live Yellow Brick Road. She encounters a hip scarecrow who joins her because he has a feeling he isn’t going anywhere; an uptight Tinman who needs her help to hang loose again, and a Lion who has lost faith in the psychiatric help of an owl. Together, the four friends seek the help of the great and powerful Wiz. Along the way, they encounter a variety of interesting characters, some of which are brand new to this version, such as the wicked Evillene, flighty Addaperle, the Kalidahs and Mice, and, of course, Glinda, the beautiful Good Witch of the North.

Over seventy students from Leland Public School and St. Mary School have been in rehearsal since February to bring this musical delight to the Leland stage. With a hardworking cast & crew, LPS staff members - Jeremy Evans, Kathleen Lau, Kim Klein, Jeanne Gross, an incredible team of parent volunteers, and the professional choreography and support of Erin Peck and Jen Miles, the audience can expect all the stops to be pulled out as the Leland Performing Arts Center presents this magical and memorable spectacle.

Ya’ll got it?
