Cruise Along
In a short week on July 30th, Charlevoix has the exciting opportunity to be a part of the Making Lake Michigan Great 2009 tour! The W.G. Jackson vessel, a 65-foot specially designed outreach and education vessel of the Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resource Institute (AWRI), will be visiting Charlevoix. The purpose of the tour is to spread word about the Lake Michigan Lakewide Management Plan (LaMP) for Lake Michigan and to gather input on lakewide issues from the public at the various ports. On cruises, participants experience hands-on science as they sample and analyze lake water. They will be offering 4 cruises throughout the day. The following are the available time slots: 1 to 2:15pm or 2:45 to 4pm. Due to the limited space available on the ship, there will be a maximum of 30 passengers (ages 9 and up) on each trip. There is no charge to participate. If interested, please contact Lauren at the Chamber at 231.547.2101 or manager@charlevoix.org.

Pure Michigan Funding
Of course, you are busy, it’s July one of the busiest months of the season. However, 2 minutes of your time is needed. Michigan’s first-ever national promotional campaign, Pure Michigan, is in financial limbo. The Michigan House of Representatives is currently discussing the continued funding of the campaign. If they choose not to continue the promotion, the funding will be cut from $30 million this year to just $5.1 million in October. That is an 83% funding cut! If you feel as though this is an important matter that needs to be addressed, all it takes is a phone call and/or email stating your name, where you live, to Charlevoix area Representative, Kevin Elsenheimer to kevinelsenheimer@house.mi.gov.

A Note From Doug DeYoung -July 27 Hearing on Regulatory Reform & JobsNext Monday, July 27th, a hearing will take place in Traverse City on Regulatory reforms needed for businesses and manufacturing to help create jobs. The hearing is open to the public. All members are encouraged to show support for reform and we would ask them to write a short two or three paragraphs on how reforming regulations that they face everyday could help create growth and job opportunities.

The panel would like bullet points with specific examples of how it could lead to job growth. They are looking for specific regulations that put either a cost burden or slow the process of growth on a business. The panel would like to be able to take ideas and suggestions and draft legislation for regulatory reform.

Jobs and Regulatory Reform Hearing
July 27th
10a.m.-noon
Hagerty Center NMC Maritime Campus
Traverse City

Hosted by Representative Wayne Schmidt Representatives those invited and scheduled to attend include Jase Bolger ( Southwest Michigan), John Proos ( St. Joseph), Bill Rogers (Brighton), & Darwin Booher.

For additional information, contact Doug DeYoung at deyoung@tcchamber.org.

Celeste Murdick’s Fudge & Candy Kitchen, owned by Leon and Celeste Murdick, opened its doors in Charlevoix in 2000. They agree that the best part of being in business in Charlevoix is that it’s “a magical place in the summer, actually from May through October there is no place on planet Earth that we would rather be!” When asked why they chose to go into the business they said that family ties played a large role -Celeste’s family literally pioneered the confectioning industry in northern Michigan. One thing they have on their Bucket List is to close down Beaver Island’s Shamrock Bar on New Year’s Eve!

A Tid-bit & Trivia Tip______________________________________________________________

The following is a new fun fact about Charlevoix and Michigan. Even if you aren’t the curious type, it may just help you at that next dinner party…

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pew donated the Charlevoix Railroad Station to the Charlevoix Historical Society in June 1992, on the 100th anniversary of the first train arriving in Charlevoix. Today it is used as a meeting place for history programs and other activities sponsored by the Historical Society.
In 1929, the Michigan State Police established the first state police radio system in the world.
