The Midst of Winter in Suttons Bay

In the midst of winter in Northern Michigan when the beaches are only inhabited by the ducks and the landscape is blanketed with lots of snow there is a certain beauty that captivates the hearts of people that appreciate a season known for cold and short days. There are the people that enjoy winter sports such as cross country skiing, downhill skiing, ice skating, and snowmobiling. There are also the people who prefer more of the indoor type activities like drinking a latte in a coffee shop or hanging out at the library and reading one book after another.

In Leelanau County is the idyllic village of Suttons Bay which can very much be enjoyed on any winter day. Located on M22 it’s very easy to get to Suttons Bay from Traverse City by the BATA bus, your own vehicle, or by cross country skis on the TART trail. Once you arrive in Suttons Bay you can head straight to the Suttons Bay Bingham District Library at 416 Front Street. This small quaint library has windows that face the beautiful Suttons Bay Municipal Beach so you can sit down with a good book or magazine and enjoy spectacular views of the bay. 

If you’re feeling hungry you can head to Boone’s Prime Time Pub and eat a tasty meal near the fireplace. Just a stone throws away from Boone’s Prime Time Pub is the Inland Seas Education Center. The center has a public exhibit and they offer shipboard programs. There is much to learn here about the Great Lakes ecosystem at the Inland Seas Education Center too.

Considering that Suttons Bay is rather small there’s quite a bit of places to shop. Bahles which has been around since 1876 is the ultimate place to shop for classic clothing. Here you can find everything from authentic Norwegian sweaters to Vintage Baseball tee shirts. For challenging games, puzzles, and toys that exercise the mind head to Brain Storm. Other unique stores are The Business Helper for art supplies, office supplies, party supplies, and interesting odds and ends as well as Suttons Bay Trading Company for dip mixes, dried produce, flavored powders, and spices. 45th Street Parallel’s Candy World will make you break your diet with their assortment of top notch hand made truffles and candies from around the world.

The Bay Theater with it’s fine architecture is a terrific place to watch classic and independent films. This is one place you won’t want to miss when the weather outside is frightful and you want some entertainment. For culinary sensation a dinner shouldn’t be missed while in Suttons Bay. Some restaurants to consider for a meal are Martha’s Leelanau Table, North Country Grill & Pub, and VI Grill.
